Your Base for the Race With Cape Town’s sporting calendar booming, you’ll want to secure the right accommodation!

Cape Town’s vibrant calendar of competitive events spans far beyond our sunny summer season, with a myriad of activities taking place throughout winter too.

What’s more, without the heat of February and March it’s the perfect time to sign up for one of the city’s worldclass events, whether it’s running, cycling or mountain biking that gets your heart racing.

Tamboerskloof, home to the Cape Milner Hotel, is a great choice for accommodation when you’re ready to take on your next race. Situated close to the city centre, trendy Kloof Street and the beaches of Camps Bay and Clifton, this beautiful suburb lies beneath Table Mountain and offers an ideal location for training (there’s plenty of climbs on tap) as well as some much-needed rest after you’ve crossed the finish line.

An action-packed Cape Town in winter

The Western Cape is gearing up for the winter sports season, and with that comes a range of competitive events to get excited about in or around the city. Here’s our pick of some of the most exciting ones to put into your calendar. On your marks, get set, go…

For trail runners: K-Way Table Mountain 16 km

For those ready for a challenge, consider taking on one of South Africa’s most renowned tracks: Table Mountain’s K-Way 16 km Race. From Constantia Nek, you’ll take to a historic road up and around Woodhead Dam. In total, it’ll be an intense 16 km jaunt across different terrain types – from single-track running to jeep tracks and cement roads.

For fun runners: Totalsports Women’s Race

This August, Cape Town will be awash in a hue of pink as 20,000 runners and walkers come together to celebrate National Women’s Day. After starting in the Cape in 2001, this race has grown in popularity and is now run in Johannesburg and Durban too. But come and experience the ‘gees’ in the Mother City! Commencing in Darling Street in the city centre with both 5 km and 10 km options available, it is an event that promotes female solidarity while providing you with a great opportunity to achieve a PB.

For long-distance runners: John Korasie 30 km

The annual John Korasie 30 km is a special event. Not only is it an important milestone for those training for the Cape Town marathon in October, but its scenic, undulating route along the False Bay coastline makes it one to remember.

For those who Tri: Cape Town Triathlon 2023 (Sprint)

With a 750 m swim from the V&A Waterfront’s Oceana Powerboat Club, a 2 x 10 km cycle along Beach Road and a 5 km run through Green Point’s Urban Park, this is Cape Town at her finest!

Date: October 1st 2023

And a little further out of town …

For mountain bikers: The Lourensford Classic

The Lourensford Classic is technically held in Autumn, but we squeezed this one in because not only is it hosted on one of the best wine farms in the Cape, it has invested heavily in new single tracks waiting for you to discover. It offers courses ranging from 25 km to 60 km and plenty of climbing (1,600km of it) and downhill options.

Date: April 16th 2023

For road walkers/runners: Robertson Miles of Smiles

Robertson, home of the aptly named Miles for Smiles annual race, is an easy 90-minute drive from Cape Town. The races all start at civilised times (the half marathon kicks off at 8am), making a day trip from your accommodation in Cape Town very doable. They welcome walkers (which is the something to smile about!) but the race is also the first post-Comrades running event on the Western Cape calendar, so a great option for serious athletes that want to flush out their legs a bit.
